Colombia’s wild eastern plains — South America’s answer to the African savanna
The Complete Guide to Los Llanos Orientales
Los Llanos Orientales — Colombia’s vast eastern plains — stretch across more than 250,000 square kilometers of flat grasslands, seasonal wetlands, gallery forests, and winding rivers in the departments of Meta, Casanare, Arauca, and Vichada. This is cowboy country: a landscape shaped by centuries of cattle ranching, where llanero culture — with its distinctive music, horsemanship, and traditions — remains deeply alive.
But the Llanos are also one of South America’s greatest wildlife destinations. During the dry season from December to March, animals concentrate around shrinking rivers and lagoons in densities that rival the African savanna. Capybara herds numbering in the hundreds, spectacled caiman by the thousands, giant anteaters striding across the grasslands, anacondas coiled in drying pools, and over 350 bird species — including massive concentrations of waterbirds like Scarlet Ibis, Jabiru Stork, and Roseate Spoonbill — create a wildlife spectacle that is still remarkably undiscovered by international tourism.
This comprehensive video takes you across the Llanos landscape — from the vast open savannas where capybara herds graze to the gallery forests teeming with birdlife. See the seasonal flooding that transforms the plains into a network of wetlands.
You will get a sense of the scale of Los Llanos, the diversity of wildlife encounters possible in a single day, and the authentic llanero ranch culture that forms the backdrop of every safari experience.
The Llanos remain one of South America’s last great wildlife frontiers — a place where the density of visible animals rivals East Africa, yet international tourism has barely arrived.
The safari experience centers on the hatos — traditional cattle ranches that have opened their doors to ecotourism. Guests stay at the ranch, eat local food, and explore the surrounding landscape on horseback, by 4×4, on foot, and by boat. Each hato has its own character, its own landscape, and its own wildlife specialties. The best approach is to combine two or more hatos for a varied experience across the Llanos ecosystem.
Our Top Llanos Destinations
Hato Altagracia — Deep Llanos, Pure Nature
This video captures the raw, untouched character of Hato Altagracia — sunrise horseback rides across the open savanna, close encounters with giant anteaters, and caiman-lined rivers at dusk.
Altagracia is where you come to disconnect completely. No phone signal, no other tourists, no agenda beyond following the wildlife and the rhythms of ranch life. The llanero families who work here become your guides and hosts.
If you want the most authentic, least commercialized Llanos experience — the one that feels like genuine exploration rather than organized tourism — Altagracia is the choice.
What makes Altagracia special is its remoteness. Without the foot traffic of more established tourism operations, the wildlife here is particularly abundant and undisturbed. Giant anteaters, capybara, caiman, deer, and hundreds of bird species roam freely across the property. At night, the sky is an unbroken dome of stars. This is the hato for travelers who want the most authentic, least commercialized Llanos experience — where you are genuinely in the wild, surrounded by nature and llanero culture in equal measure.
El Encanto de Guanapalo — Diverse Activities, Three Hatos
This video showcases Guanapalo’s unique three-hato concept — each property offering a different landscape and activity set, connected into a single multi-day itinerary across the Casanare plains.
From truck safaris spotting hundreds of capybaras and caimans, to horseback rides alongside working cowboys, to boat excursions through flooded gallery forests — Guanapalo packs the most variety into one Llanos trip.
With comfortable infrastructure and professional guides, this is the best option for first-time Llanos visitors who want comprehensive wildlife access without sacrificing comfort.
The Guanapalo operation includes wildlife truck safaris across the open savanna, horseback riding with llanero cowboys, canoe trips along gallery forest rivers, night walks for caiman and capybara, and guided birdwatching with local experts. Accommodations are comfortable ranch-style lodges with good food and warm hospitality. Because it spans three properties, the variety of habitats — from open grassland to riverine forest to seasonal wetlands — is exceptional. This is the best choice for first-time visitors to the Llanos or families who want a well-organized, varied experience.
Hato San Pablo — Upscale Safari with River Access
Hato San Pablo stands out for its river access — boat tours along waterways lined with caimans, river turtles, and kingfishers add a dimension most Llanos hatos cannot offer.
The property combines upscale accommodation with serious wildlife encounters. Expect comfortable rooms, proper meals, and excursions led by knowledgeable naturalist guides who know every corner of the ranch.
This is the Llanos for travelers who want premium comfort alongside genuine wilderness — a safari lodge experience adapted to the Colombian plains.
River tours at San Pablo open up a different dimension of Llanos wildlife: freshwater dolphins, giant river otters, caiman basking on sandy banks, and dense gallery forest alive with monkeys and birds. The lodge itself is the most comfortable in the Llanos — good rooms, solid meals, and reliable infrastructure. Horseback rides, savanna truck safaris, and cultural experiences with the ranch workers round out the experience. San Pablo is ideal for travelers who want wildlife immersion without sacrificing comfort, and who want to experience both the open grasslands and the river ecosystems that make the Llanos unique.
Llanero Cattle Work — The Working Ranch Experience
This video captures the real llanero cattle work tradition — cowboys on horseback herding cattle across flooded savannas, a practice unchanged for centuries in Los Llanos Orientales.
The annual cattle roundup (known as “trabajo de llano”) is one of Colombia’s most striking cultural traditions. Riders wade through waist-deep water, roping and guiding cattle using techniques passed down through generations.
Witnessing this firsthand is not a staged show — it is the living, working culture of the Llanos. Some hatos allow guests to ride alongside the cowboys during these operations, creating an experience found nowhere else in South America.
At Hato Los Deseos, we documented a traditional cattle round-up in action. The combination of horsemanship, open landscape, dust, and the sheer energy of the event is unforgettable. Many of our Llanos itineraries include the opportunity to participate in or observe cattle work, depending on the season and the ranch schedule. It is a window into the human side of the Llanos — the culture, the pride, and the daily reality of the people who have shaped this landscape for generations.
Good to Know
Best Season
The dry season from December through March offers the best wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. The wet season (April–November) makes many roads impassable but offers lush green landscapes and different birding opportunities.
Getting There
Most hatos are accessed from Yopal (Casanare), a 1-hour flight from Bogotá. From Yopal, 4×4 transfers to the hatos take 2–5 hours depending on the property and road conditions. We coordinate all logistics including flights, ground transfers, and ranch reservations.
What to Expect
Accommodations are comfortable but rustic — ranch houses with basic rooms, shared meals, and limited connectivity. Expect heat (35°C+), early mornings, dusty roads, and extraordinary wildlife. Bring binoculars, a good camera with a zoom lens, sun protection, insect repellent, and an adventurous spirit.
Combine With
Bogotá city tour, Eastern Andes cloud forest birding (Chingaza or Sumapaz), or extend to the Amazon for a complete lowland wildlife combination. A 3–5 day Llanos stay combines well with 2–3 days in the Andes for an exceptional biodiversity itinerary.
