The Dart Frogs Tour focuses on one of the most significant regions of the country and the world: the biogeographical Chocó. This region is cataloged as a place of invaluable biological diversity, where its mountains, its crystalline rivers, the vegetation typical of the humid tropical forests make of the destination a unique place to find species of great interest like the Dart Frogs of the genus Dendrobatidae.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arriving to Cali.

Upon arrival in the city of Cali, a private transport will take you to the hotel. There you can enjoy a typical regional dinner and together with the leader guide you can talk about the details of the Tour.

Day 2

Anchicayá – Valle del Cauca

Early in the morning we will head towards Anchicayá place located on the western flank of the western mountain range. This destination has large natural areas of tropical rainforests that offer great opportunities to observe a morph of the dart frog Oophaga histrionica and one of the most special dart frogs in Colombia, the Lehmann Frog, Oophaga lehmanni. After dinner we will do Herping in the surroundings of the Lodge.

Day 3

Anchicayá – Valle del Cauca

Very early in the morning we will visit the private trails inside the Natural Reserve, there we will have the opportunity to look for another specialty of the area, the dart frog Epipedobates boulengeri. We will also look for snakes such as Boa constrictor, Chironius grandisquamis and C. monticola, tree frogs such as Boana boans, Agalychnis spurrelli and lizards of the genus Anolis.

Day 4

Anchicayá – Valle del Cauca

This day we will have the opportunity to visit a natural area accompanied by a community association present in the sector. Our main objective will be the dart frog Andinobates fulguritus and the Anchicayá’s morph of the dart frog Oophaga histrionica. Other specialties of the area will be the Size-X snake Bothrox asper, and with some luck, we hope to find one of the largest snakes of America the rotting snake Lachesis achrocorda.

Day 5

San Cipriano – Valle del Cauca

We will depart from Anchicayá to a magical place where the pristine forest, crystal clear rivers and the warmth of its people will allow us to enjoy a great diversity of amphibians and reptiles: The San Cipriano Forest Reserve. There we can delight with snakes such as the Porthidium nasutum, the arboreal frog of the Chocó Agalychnis spurrelli, among other species. We will also have the opportunity to meet one of the most special dart frogs of this Tour: the dart frog Oophaga histriónica morfo, with a red head, a jewel of the humid tropical Colombian forests.

Day 6

San Cipriano – Valle del Cauca

After breakfast we will take a short walk in search of some snake hunters such as Oxybelis brevirostris and lizards like Basiliscus galeritus in one of the trails of the San Cipriano Forest Reserve. There will be a break after lunch and at night there will be an outing to look for the specialties of the area such as tree frogs, glass frogs, freshwater turtles, among others.

Day 7

Yotoco Natural Reserve – Valle del Cauca

On our way to the last destination we will stop at the Yotoco National Forest Reserve, one of the last patches of protected cloud forest on the eastern slope of the western mountain range. This natural area has become an important refuge for several species of fauna and flora in the Valle del Cauca. Our target will be the ruby frog Andinobates bombere a species of poisonous frog endemic to Colombia and some crystal frogs.

Day 8

Santa Cecilia – Risaralda

What better place than Santa Cecilia to know one of the three species of the genus Phyllobates that exist in Colombia. In this place we can find various morphs of Oophaga histrionica, red and yellow buffalo eye morpho. It is also another opportunity to observe different types of snakes like the red-eyed hunter Siphlophis compressus.

Day 9

Santa Cecilia / Guarato- Risaralda

We will visit an indigenous community in search of a new morpho of Oophaga histrionica. We will also have the opportunity of observing some frogs such as Scinax sugillatus, crystal frogs Hyalinobathrachium aureoguttatum and Sachatamia ilex, the endemic lizard Anolis maculigula and the spiny lizard Enyalioides heterolepis.

Day 10

We will make some herpes in the morning. Then we will go to the city of Pereira. Departure from Pereira Airport.
